Many companies design cabinets, but few design cabinets with the elderly or disabled in mind. We do! The design of the cabinet is not the only factor to consider, placement also has a large impact on use and access. Because we started out building custom cabinetry, it's second nature for us to achieve a truly beautiful looking room, while accommodating function for all types of users. We custom build all our cabinetry and millwork so specific height, depth, and widths are never a problem. There are recommended specifications regarding sizes and layout. When we design cabinetry, we follow some simple guide lines that are often overlooked. |
| When designing base cabinets, always make sure doors swing 180 degrees, completely away from opening allowing full access to any drawers, pullouts, etc. Standard depth cabinets should have roll out shelving. Doors should never be too wide to swing fully open at an arms length. | |
| Sometimes for storage of larger or heavy items, shallow base cabinets are the best solution. This will provide easy access to a sturdy shelf. Sliding doors are another good solution to concealing storage for a neat appearance. | |
| Oversized drawers are a good alternative to roll out shelves, they can have low cut sides or wire baskets. Regardless of the interior components, the drawers should never be too wide. | |
| Many drawers can also be a good solution, this allows easy access without the need to search for a small item in a deep drawer. | |
| A lazy susan is an excellent interior option. They can be used in many situations, in addition to the obvious corner. No matter where it is used, doors must give full access to interior. | |
| Pull out pantries can be a great source of storage. Access can be had from both sides. Height increments can be broken down into two or even three sections, depending on individual needs. | |

Hardware should also be a consideration when designing, obviously it has to be easy to grab, but still accent the look we're after. We try to use over sized designs that are easy on older hands and have no small crevasses that might trap a finger or passing wheelchair. |

In addition to custom cabinetry built to specific sizes, we also fabricate cabinetry that moves. We use only premium quality electric servo motors with nylon worm drives, providing years of trouble free convenience. This makes storage space easily reachable that otherwise could not be used. And because it moves, it can be mounted at standard heights making it more convenient to users who are not disabled. Cabinets can also be fitted with audible alerts, making it safer and easier for a blind user. |

Counter tops and work surfaces can be made to move up and down, creating an unlimited adjustment in height. The tops can even be sectioned so that different heights can be used at the same time. |

Wall hung cabinets can move down to the counter top, bringing more storage to a useable height. When not in use, they appear to be standard wall cabinets, this can be a real advantage when the home is ready for resale. |
